Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife revealed plans to set up a private school in a disadvantaged Silicon Valley city, where they will combine education with health care. Zuckerberg was proud of his wife, Priscilla Chan's, plans to create an elementary school in the working-class city of East Palo Alto. Chan works as a pediatrician and has also been a teacher. She has seen firsthand how poor health conditions make education difficult in the classroom, her husband said. "Health and education are intimately connected," Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. "When children are not healthy, they cannot learn as easily." Despite being located between the high-income city of Palo Alto and Menlo Park, where Facebook is based, East Palo Alto has long had a bad reputation for crime, gangs and poverty. "By offering health care and education in one place, the goal is to support families and help children from disadvantaged communities reach their full potential," said the Facebook founder. “It is inspiring to see Priscilla grow as an entrepreneur and leader.” In June of last year, Zuckerberg and Chan began pouring $120 million into San Francisco Bay Area schools. "Improving public education in our country and our community is something Priscilla and I really want," Zuckerberg said.
